The
Birnam Inn
WELCOME TO THE INN
A pop-up pub at the Gateway to the Highlands
Set on the edge of Birnam, with Birnam Wood rising behind it and the River Tay flowing nearby, The Birnam Inn, known locally as “The Tap”, has long been part of the social fabric of the village.
Originally the stables for the Birnam Hotel, then later a traditional coaching inn, it welcomed travellers making their way through Highland Perthshire, offering rest, food, and a good pint. Its location, close to the railway and main routes north, made it a natural gathering point for both locals and travellers.
Over the years, The Tap developed a reputation as a proper local pub—unpretentious, lively, and rooted in the community. It became a place for post-work pints, live music, celebrations, and the kind of everyday moments that give a pub its character.
The building forms part of the wider Birnam Hotel site, which has seen many phases of change and restoration over the years. As it reopens its doors once again, the Inn carries a warm, relaxed spirit—deeply connected to its surroundings and community.
It’s been a quick, hands-on effort to get the doors open, so this isn’t the full grand reveal just yet. Instead, expect a simple, welcoming pub: an open fire, local beers, seasonal pies and sides, and a relaxed garden space beneath Birnam Hill.
We’ll be open Friday to Sunday, 12–10pm, serving Scottish beers, seasonal pies and sides, along with tea, coffee, and a thoughtfully chosen wine list.
Every drink you buy supports the team behind the bar and contributes directly to the ongoing restoration of the hotel.
